Service Area Business Settings: How to Set Them Up Without Killing Visibility

Are you a Storefront or a Service Area Business (SAB)? Getting this wrong is the #1 cause of visibility issues for contractors.

In 60 Seconds

SAB Settings in 60 Seconds
  • Google has two types of profiles: Hybrid (Show address) and Service Area (Hide address).
  • If you run a plumbing business out of your home, you MUST hide your address. Showing a residential address is a violation.
  • The Hybrid Trap: If you have a shop but nobody goes there (it's just a warehouse), hide it. Customers getting angry at a locked door leaves bad reviews.
  • Service Area Radius: Setting your area to 'The Whole State' does not help you rank. It dilutes you.
  • Stick to a tight cluster of zip codes (max 2 hours driving) to signal relevance.

The "Address" field in your Google Business Profile is a landmine.

For retailers (restaurants, shops), it's easy. You show your address.

For contractors (plumbers, roofers, mobile detailers), it's complicated. You go to the customer; the customer doesn't come to you.

Google calls this a Service Area Business (SAB).

If you configure this wrong, you will either be suspended (for showing a home address) or invisible (for setting your area too wide).

To Hide or Not to Hide?

You MUST Hide Your Address If:

  • You operate out of your personal residence.
  • You operate out of a "virtual office" (Regus, UPS Store) - Note: Actually, you shouldn't use these at all, but if you do, absolutely hide it.
  • You have a warehouse but no signage/staff to receive customers.

You Can Show Your Address If:

  • You have permanent signage.
  • You have staff present during stated hours.
  • You welcome walk-ins.

Hybrid Model: Pizza delivery is the classic example. You can eat in OR get delivery. They show the address + set a service area.

Setting Your Service Area Correctly

A common myth is: "If I select the whole state, I will rank for the whole state."

[!CAUTION] The Distance Reality: Google grants ranking based on Prominence and Proximity. If you verify in Chicago and set your service area to Include Milwaukee (90 miles away), you simply will not rank in Milwaukee organically. You are diluting your signals. Stick to areas within ~60 minutes of your base for organic dominance.

The Best Practice Strategy

  1. Primary City: Set the city where you are verified.
  2. Core Suburbs: Add the 10-15 towns immediately touching your primary city.
  3. The 2-Hour Rule: Google's guidelines state service areas should not extend beyond ~2 hours of driving time.

Common Mistakes

  • The "Staffed" Lie: Claiming you are open for walk-ins at your home. A competitor can easily report this, leading to immediate suspension.
  • Overlapping Profiles: Creating fake profiles at employee homes to "blanket" a city. Google is increasingly aggressive at nuking these "lead gen" networks.
  • Setting "United States": Unless you are a national software company, this tells Google you have no local relevance anywhere.

Converting from Storefront to SAB

If you moved your office to your house, you need to transition cleanly.

  1. Go to "Edit Profile" -> "Location".
  2. Toggle "Show business address to customers" to OFF.
  3. Go to "Service Area".
  4. Add your cities.
  5. Save.

Warning: This often triggers a re-verification (Video Call). Be ready to show your truck and tools to prove you are a real mobile business.

Verification Checklist

  • Address Visibility Toggle: Your address is hidden if you operate from a residence or unstaffed warehouse.
  • Zip Code Precision: You have listed specific zip codes or cities rather than a broad county-level radius.
  • Service Consistency: The areas listed in your GBP match the towns mentioned in the footer of your website.
  • Photo Proof: You have uploaded photos of your wrapped vehicle parked at locations within your service area.

FAQ

Q: Can I have multiple SAB profiles? A: Only if you have multiple distinct crews and physical hubs. If you only have one truck, you should only have one profile.

Q: Does hiding my address hurt my ranking? A: Slightly, yes. A pinpoint storefront is a stronger signal than a generic area. However, a suspended profile has zero visibility. Follow the rules.

Q: How do I rank in a city 50 miles away? A: You don't—at least not in the Map Pack. To reach that far, you must use Local Service Ads (LSA) or open a legitimate branch office.

Conclusion

SAB settings are about signaling "Local Relevance" without triggering "Spam Filters." At Max Digital Edge, we build the Local Visibility Systems that keep you compliant and visible.
